home remedies for cough and cold in kids

It can be frustrating when kids fall sick with symptoms like an annoying cough and cold that doesn’t go away after consulting a doctor and taking all medicines. So the best thing is to look for home remedies for cough and cold.

It is always better to avoid over the counter cough medicines for kids for a long time as they can cause serious side effects. Michelle George tried all home remedies for cough, cold and chest congestion which persisted for more than 3 weeks for her son until she saw a kada recipe on the internet. She modified this recipe adding some more ingredients.

michelle george authorMichelle George is mamma to 4 year old Eric and a 3 week old baby girl. After 8+ years of corporate experience with DEShaw and John Deere, she took a break last year to spend time with her son who was almost 3 and not yet speaking fluently. Her being at home was such a positive influence on her son that she decided to extend her break and enjoy full-time mommyhood for 3-4 years. Michelle has an MBA in HR from Symbiosis Center for Mgmt and HRD, Pune and did her graduation in Economics from Stella Maris College, Chennai.

In the words of Michelle George

“My son’s persistent cold, cough and chest congestion of 3+ weeks that wasn’t going away with steam inhalation 4 times a day, vicks vaporub on chest and soles of feet, honey, adalodakam and lime thrice a day went off completely within 3 days after having this Decoction.”

Ingredients for the decoction :

  • Take few Tulsi leaves,
  • Panikkoorkka leaves (Coleus aromaticus)
  • 5-6 peppercorns
  • 5-6 cloves
  • 1 inch chopped ginger
  • 2 cups of water
  • Boil it till the quantity reduces to half.

Give 2 tablespoons of this thrice a day mixed with honey, few drops of lemon juice and a pinch of raw powdered turmeric. Since my son doesn’t like the sight of turmeric floating around I stopped it after day 1 but it still worked magic with the remaining ingredients.

This kada cures cough and cold due to weather changes. If it is an allergic cough this kada has no effect. She recommends giving this only after 1 year because honey should definitely not be given before 1 year. Since her son is almost 4 she increased the concentration of ingredients with every passing day. For the first attempt, you can try with just 2-3 peppercorns, 2-3 cloves and half inch chopped ginger. Depending on how your child takes it you can increase the concentration.

As the decoction above has no effect for allergic cough. Michelle has a remedy for allergic cough too, which her maid gave her.

“For my son’s allergic cough, we make him eat a hard boiled egg yolk just before sleeping. It must be the last thing ingested before going to sleep. No brushing teeth or drinking water after that. And only egg yolk, not egg white. Egg white can be had separately earlier or the next day.”

Disclaimer: The major causes of cough are upper and lower respiratory infection, common cold, sinusitis, acid reflux and asthma. Please try the above decoction only after consulting a doctor to rule out any major diseases like pneumonia, whooping cough, asthma etc.
