Meet Chinmayie: Founder of Soul-Ring sling and Blogger at Love food eat. Soul Sling is inspired by the simplicity and beauty of traditional baby wearing practices that seamlessly fuses comfort, convenience and style.
‘Love Food Eat‘ is a vegetarian food blog with simple recipes, which are healthy and easy to make
1. Tell us about yourself and your family. What were you doing prior to Soul?
I am a work from home, homeschooling mother of two. My husband is a designer. I was a graphic designer who turned to food blogging after the birth of my daughter. Food blogging introduced me to food photography, which I fell in love with instantly. Soul happened to me without much planning. When I was pregnant with my son, I realized that there are very few ergonomic baby carriers available in India. I was looking for a ring sling to suit my requirements and had to order it from the US, as it wasn’t locally available. After using it for a few weeks, I knew that this product needs to be in every Indian parent’s life.
2. What are Soul- ring slings? Let our readers know about it.
Soul ring slings are one size fits all, fully adjustable baby carriers made out of cloth and 2 rings. They can be used from the time your baby is a newborn up till toddlerhood. It’s a simple product which is a must have for all new parents. It lets you carry your baby close to you with ease and style. Our slings are easy to use, quick to wear and perfect to carry around in your handbag when not in use. They are also soft and breathable unlike thick padded carriers and are easy to clean too! They come in different fabrics and colours which can be bought directly on our website. They are locally made and very affordable too!
3. What was the catalyst that started your business?
I first got to know about baby wearing almost 6 years ago when I had my daughter. She was a high needs baby who wanted to be carried all the time. I bought a regular baby carrier available in the market and it was thick, uncomfortable and made her hot! I wanted to buy a sling for her but it wasn’t available in India and was quite expensive outside. By then she was growing up and I wasn’t sure if I wanted to invest in one then. When I got pregnant with my son almost 2 years ago, I researched a lot about baby wearing. Depending on our lifestyle, our needs and climate, I decided to buy myself a ring sling. I fell in love with the sling the moment I wore my son in it for the first time. I just had to make this wonderful product available to as many Indian women as possible.
4. What do you love about baby wearing? What activities you rely on while baby wearing on Soul?
There are lots of things about baby wearing that I love but my favorite is being able to cuddle your baby! Wrapping your little one close to you, feeling their soft skin against your skin, being able to hear their heartbeat and feel their breath is priceless. When my son was much smaller, I loved being able to wear him to sleep. I hated keeping him down because they are little for such a small period! I wore him regularly while working on the computer or going for a walk. Now he is much bigger and wants to be free to explore when we are home but he loves cuddling with me in the sling when we are out especially when there are strangers around. I like the fact that I can hold him for however long he wants and not put him down because my hand hurts 🙂
5. What was the most satisfied feedback you got from your customers?
I get messages and emails from my customers everyday. People thank me for the product and tell me how they could eat a meal, go for a walk, put their baby to sleep, play with their other child etc. only because of baby wearing. But there was one mom who wrote to me about wearing her son when he had a little accident and how she could comfort him in the hospital in a Soul Sling. She told me how special Soul was to her and that had me in tears. As a mother myself, it is very satisfying that I am making a product which makes a difference in another mothers life.
6. As everyone is heading to baby wearing now, where do you see soul in next 5 years?
I have a very simple vision for Soul. I want my slings to reach as many mothers as possible. I really started it because of the difference it made in my life so I am happy to be spreading that love. I want to experiment with different fabrics and styles so that I have something in store for every parent.
7. What is the reason to start a food blog? Can you tell us more about it?
I have been a foodie all my life. I loved cooking and eating and followed several food blogs from the time I was in college. I wanted to start a blog of my own but never got around to doing it until I bought my first DSLR. I started ‘Love Food Eat’ and it took over my life completely. I blog healthy vegetarian cooking where I focus on organic, local, seasonal and traditional recipes.
8. Mom of two, blogger, food photographer, entrepreneur. How do you manage it all?
It’s not easy to be honest. I think the key to doing it all is to get the priorities right and decide how much time you want to spend on each one of your interests. I have realized that it’s important to know when it’s time to slow down because too much work is never a good thing. One has to take time to relax, talk to friends and family, go a walk or read a book.
9. What do you do to recharge? What are your other interests?
I love cooking so I cook when I want to take a break from work. I also play with my son or go out with my daughter when I need some down time.
10. What is a day in a life of you like?
Just like the day of any stay at home with lots of computer breaks thrown in. I work out of my dining table in my pajamas 🙂
11. Any advises to share with our parentrepreneurs?
Try to get as much help as possible from all possible sources. There is no point in doing it all and getting burnt out. Doing anything else while being a parent is like doing 2 full time jobs
